thanks for this. brought back memories. i budgeted and travelled from England to India in 1987 with about 40 other people. the journey itself was incredible and we travelled to amazing places although in 1987 we had the fall out from Mount St Helens erupting which caused weather chaos, the worst winter in 100 years in Turkey, it was brutally cold and the snow was deeper than our mercedes truck. the people were mostly very hospitable and welcoming. the bedouin in the desert of Syria invited us to their campfires, we were invited to weddings where the groom arrived on a white horse, the crusaders castkes were incredible. the heat, humidity, dust and sometimes hardship travelling for hours without food or drink were difficult. drinking purified water from wells with disgusting sterilised tablets were horrible. bathing in the Dead Sea and even the Red sea and Petra was incredible. the secret police followed us throughout Iran and we were met with a barrage of stones by some iranians angry with us belieiving us to be American during the Iran Iraq war. nepal was incredible, the Himalayas, Phewa Thal and Chitwan National Park were incredible. it was an incredible experience althoug overwhelming. i dont drink alcohol and have never taken drugs or smoked so not all on thehippy trail partook in this indulgence. most of us after 6 to 7 months serious overlanding and camping were seriously dehydrated, lost a tonne of weight, had mysterious bugs and Delhi Belly regularly and sleeping in a hot tent that had been out in the baking sun all day was impossible. however i have amazing memories and met some amazing people. goodness what an experience. i also kept a diary of that trip

Where did you find this clip? I’ve been trying to find the full version, but I don’t think any of the clips I saw had this.

I did this journey in 1970. My motivation was curiosity and a need to get away from boredom with London. Also one would meet people who would suggest places to go and you might join up with other people for sections of the journey. In my experience you couldn't do this journey if you were a layabout. There was quite a lot of hardship and hard work. Most travellers were not well off and it was hard work finding transport and accommodation within your budget. Travelling sometimes by yourself by public transport through India, Afghanistan, Turkey was not easy. The people you might meet on a bus in say the middle of Afghanistan, were generally very pleasant and at worst just indifferent. The most important thing was to smile and be polite. And while in moments of stress this was sometimes not easy, it would smooth out most situations. It is a fact that there were masses of cheap drugs and nearly every traveller would indulge to some extent. The most prevalent drug was hashish which was invariably VERY strong. I remember smoking huge amounts using a pipe like a small clay trumpet that was called a chillum. Towards the end of my journey I found drugs just made life much more difficult so I stopped. I am so glad I had this experience - there were some unforgettable moments.
